Curtis is a native of Yarrawonga, Victoria, Australia she is the daughter of Carmencita Ojales a Filipina from Bolinao Pangasinan and James Ernest Curtis-Smith an Australian lawyer. In 1982, her father married Ojales. Her youngest sibling Jasmine has also become an actor. Clare was a mother-in-law in their father's family. Clare passed away at the age of four months old in 2007.
